Characters April 12, 2008

As I didn’t finish reading the novel yet, I don’t think that it’s useful to write a complete characterization. But I want to list the most important characters and write down some information.

At first something about the characters, we get to know in the first diary entries

Careless, helpless

Grand-child of Tessie and Douglas

Wants to retrace Olivia’s life

Neighbor

Looks like a ghost, hair in one dropping plait, paper-white, vaporous, strong and ringing voice, toughended-up

Religious, hopeless

Has been in India for 30 years, lots of experience (has lived through a Hindu-Muslim riot, a smallpox epidemic and famines)

 

Miss Tietz

 

 

Swiss, came out with the Christian Sisterhood

 

The unkempt European

Around thirty years, fair, tall, clothes in tatters, white skin, long, tangled and matted hair

 

 

 

 

 

And the characters from the second story (1923)

Olivia

·        Wife of Douglas (they are married for just some months)

·         Most of the time she sits at home and is bored

·         She waits for Douglas to come home

·         When she is together with Mrs. Crawford and Mrs. Minnies she feels like an outsider

·         She enjoys to spent her time with the Nawab and Harry, because she has the feeling that they understand her

·         She doesn’t want get to know India and it’s culture and tries to build up a little Britain at home
